How to shift your mindset to embrace exercise
Around half of my clients love to exercise and have made it part of their life. This means around half don’t find it a natural or easy thing to embrace. Having always loved sport, competitions, and outdoor pursuits, culminating in representing Australia in the sport of ultra-distance triathlon I guess it’s something that is a normal part of my world. I believe exercise is an essential ingredient for success and for me, keeping at the top of my game. Embracing exercise comes down to a desire to wan to exercise coupled with an understanding of the ingredients of a mindset for success. Furthermore, how to shift your mindset and make exercise a natural and enjoyable part of your life.
Exercise is an essential ingredient for success in life
Now, when I coach clients, even though their initial focus might be on getting unstuck in their business, reducing stress or improving relationships, adding in exercise is an essential ingredient. Exercise has many benefits, one of which is that it releases endorphins in the body. Fundamentally we are energy beings and driven by how we feel, and endorphins help you feel good. Additionally, to perform optimally at work and life, it’s important to keep your energy clear, which necessitates working out your mind and body.
For this reason, I often end up helping my clients with how to shift their mindset and embrace exercise. Some of the successes have been non-runners, aka couch potatoes, become park runners, complete 10 km races, half marathons, and even a couple of Ironman triathlons. So, I know change is possible and transformations in the world of exercise can occur.
In the words of Italian billionaire Brunello Cucinelli, one of the three things money can’t buy is:
“Fitness: You have to keep fit, whether you’re rich or not.”
How to shift your mindset and get started with embracing exercise
- Decide what your first goal will be. TIP: Start small
- Drill deep down into your ‘why’
- Write the date of an event/race/park run/goal. Create a timeline and plan
- Connect your goal with your deepest values to ensure they are aligned
- Work on your health value to move it higher up in your list
- Get started with small steps – literally
- Schedule training days in a diary as non-negotiable
- Find an accountability or training partner
- Tick off each training session and celebrate. This helps you shift your mindset to one that focuses on small wins consistently
- Keep going, know there will be stumbles along the way. Review progress and remember to be flexible
Shift your mindset and focus on what you want
Sounds pretty easy really? However, the key is to focus on how to shift your mindset to focus diligently on what you want. This is where my role comes in. I help my clients to identify, reveal and clear out hidden blocks and patterns that sabotage success and stall momentum. We work on getting clear on what is really important to them. Furthermore, I equip them with mindset tools and techniques to help them keep going and prevent reasons and excuses getting in the way.
Mindset is an essential ingredient in creating healthy lasting habits. The key is to stick with your actions to prove to yourself you are the sort of person who does what they say they will. It’s vital to show yourself you are reliable and trustworthy.
Getting crystal clear on your ‘why’ is critical fuel for the journey. Likewise, know your values. Understanding what is important and ensuring health really is important and is reflected in thoughts, and language patterns.
Overcoming the ‘I don’t feel like exercising today’ is a huge mindset shift
Clearing out old beliefs that might be sabotaging your way forward is essential and a huge mindset shift. Furthermore, so is working on your state management. How often do you exercise when you tell yourself you ‘don’t feel like doing it today?’ or, ‘I can always go to the gym tomorrow?’
Changing statements such as ‘exercise is hard,’ or ‘I hate exercising’ to ‘exercise is becoming easier,’ or ‘I am learning to love exercise,’ is a simple first step. Furthermore, a key in discovering exactly how to shift your mindset towards success. Releasing long-held rigid beliefs is important for developing essential traits of a growth mindset.
Reviewing the journey and helping my clients get back on track if they have a wobble is a common and necessary step. Life happens along the way, and it will happen to you too!
It is too easy to let work commitments, families and obligations get in the way of forgoing scheduled daily exercise time-blocks.
Embracing a never quit attitude is another mindset shift
My motto is never, ever, ever quit. What this means is that it isn’t too easy for my clients to get away with reasons and excuses that often!
In conclusion, what I have found, when exercise does become a lasting habit (and this can take anything from 2 or 3 months to 12 months for some people), the positive effects are immense. They ripple out into all areas of life. Furthermore, the key lies in understanding how to shift your mindset to ensure success. The next step is then to continue developing a champion mindset for success.
The ripple effect is awesome to witness. Businesses grow; relationships improve (including the one with yourself,) new friends are made, energy increases, people become healthier and happier and step up to new opportunities. Moreover, we all know one of the greatest benefits of exercise is that your brain releases endorphins; chemicals that help you feel good. And when you feel good you are more motivated to keep going. Furthermore, exercise also helps burn off stress chemicals.
So how can you afford not to make time in your busy life for exercise? Why wouldn’t you want to get started today? And of course, shift your mindset towards success and possibly life-changing results!
